Back to Reality*

With WABO secure for winter it is now time to chisel off the salt and sun cream and detangle our hair, and head back to reality.
We have lived the dream for this year, and truly had an amazing experience.
I hope you all enjoyed reading “Living the dream” as much as we enjoyed experiencing it .
So until the next “Dream to Reality”

Smooth Sailing!

Of course it hasn’t been all smooth sailing, there have been a few situations when I’ve thought  I MUST BE MAD, I am usually at the helm and Frank is dealing with the situation at the bow, and it is never never with 15 knot of less wind!
A fellow sailor made this comment “ Its just like having a baby – There is a great deal going on, and usually very stressful  (for me that is) but all is soon forgotten in a day or two when the weather is again calm and beautiful!!
I must admit this is probably true.
I have found getting the weather report on the VHF very frustrating at times as it seems to squelch at the most inconvenient moment , with internet and power  under control , we have found Windfinder, and The Marine Meteorological  Centre Split very good.
Frank and I spent the last couple of days at Movrarstica on the island of Ciovo , we have anchored here before , and its an EASY sail back to the Marina. From this town it is also possible to catch the local bus to Trogir.
Ciovo  has very narrow winding roads and has a bridge connecting it to the mainland at Trogir, these roads were built many years ago when traffic wasn’t a problem, at this time of the year with so much traffic, the bus driver had a bit of a challenge making his way around the corners. In some sections you could hear everyone breath in as the driver tried to squeeze past cars and fences!!!

Lazy Lines!

We have spent a few days in our favourite places , just giving Franz and Monika a taste of Croatia as they have never ventured here before. The last two days we decided to spend at the west end of Solta (pronounced sholta).
It was a perfect day to sail force 3 S.W. from SV Klements Islands, This is a following wind so it makes the yacht , kind of surf the waves and a roll a bit.
I think it is similar to being in a top loader washing machine, our guest were extremely quiet for most of the day( maybe a little see krank) but soon perked up when we started the motor!!!
Unfortunately the heat was also not helping either !!
This end of Solta is also very nice and  has  a couple of small islands at the tip near Sesula and Maslinica, we decided to anchor at Sesula, and then walk across to Maslinica, (Maslinica has a very nice marina just been opened)
Sesula is quite deep in parts so we decided to stern tie, as i have mention before it is a bit of a challenge – but this time we  have help from Franz, all goes well until I need to relay instructions  – now Franz’s English is not to bad , and I can understand German pretty good, but speaking just doesn’t come naturally , sooo what sounds good in my head comes outs totally foreign to everyone, so i had Franz moving Wabo jnr from the stern to the bow , saying “here oder HERE” when i actually wanted the anchor let out, poor Frank is standing on the rocks , rope in hand  saying Nay Nay Die anchor Franz !!! Finally we are held fest . What i found  amusing was  that we were being photographed , or maybe a movie. Perhaps! it was because Frank was stern tying in  the all together!!!! ( he’s just missing the beautiful flowing locks!!! )
Sesula also  has buoys that belong to the restaurant, now these proved to be a bit of a challenge for a  family on a hire yacht  !
We were just having a quiet beer at the restaurant after walking back from Maslinica, and we watched the drama unfold.
As the yacht was leaving the mooring it somehow collected the lazy line and this got caught around the propeller, after watching for sometime,
Frank just couldn’t sit and watch and finally went to help, much to the relief of the men on board , and the other yacht owners who were fending of  the yacht with their feet. He accessed the situation and the lazy line was secure around the prop, that was all that was stopping it from drifting on to the other yachts. The solution was to attach a line from the yacht to the buoy and winch the yacht to relieve the pressure on the line and remove it from the propeller  BUT the mum in the water had a better idea!
Tie a rope to the offending lazy line and then mum , daughter and Frank could swim backwards really fast and this would free the the rope from the propeller !!!!!! This may have gone on for sometime  without franks help!
After a little bit of discussion  Frank took off his goggles and said “Halt diene Fresse” if you wish me to help.  Which she did and the yacht was finally free within minutes and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
They then made a quick exit!!!!
We must now head back to base as our guest were only here for a short time.
We now only have a couple of days of relaxation and time to mentally prepare for the  dream awakening !!!

Anchoring

Anchoring is our preferred option and has been extremely easy in most locations – As it gets much busier in July space is a premium, so we now have quite a few yachts stern tied as well as anchoring in the middle of the bays,so you can imagine everyone gets a little nervous.
We now find people just don’t sit and watch, they scamper as fast as they can to the bow giving advice , in some cases hurling abuse ,this has kept us entertained on many occasions –  UNTIL! we were at the receiving end. *now we can see why some people keep watch,
We usually have an anchor buoy in place , just to let other boats know where the anchor rests , but the problem with this is that there are a few inexperienced skippers who think , “perfect a buoy just for us”!!!
So this evening we had friends on board for drinks and nibbles – remembering once the table is set in the cockpit there are no quick manoeuvre’s , as everything must be placed under where someone is sitting.
We watched a very nice motor cruiser meander in  and spotted  our buoy so Frank scurried up to the bow to give him the tip,  smiles and waves were exchanged . The skipper then went hard to port collecting the buoy and catching the rope around the prop. – we were now drifting fast, onto other yachts, so everyone was now very anxious  OMG , everybody up , table unset and stowed , guest left holding what they could , and I’m ready to start the motor . We were lucky the prop chopped the buoy into a million pieces and the rope dropped, so all that was required was frank to jump overboard and reset the anchor – The lovely Italians apologised profusely and delivered us a bottle of champers !!
Unfortunately they just couldn’t  get there anchor set without tangling with someone this went on for a while, we were happy and toasted their misadventure !
We decided to catch up with some other people in Milna and again there was another festival, as we were arriving there were many many boats all shapes and sizes heading out of the harbour,
This festival happens every year at this time. There is a small island just outside of Milna approx. 2 nm from the village, The story as we were told  – This little island is the Island of knowledge that was bought by the Dalmatian’s from the Venetian’s and the festival revolves around lassoing  the island and towing it into the Harbour along with its secret Knowledge . Of course in reality this is not possible but when the boats returned to the harbour a cannon is fired off to celebrate the victory !!(gave me such a fright as we were only 200mt from it. @%*^>)
There is plenty of music , wine and fried sardines , a donation is welcome with the proceeds going to the community.
It was a fabulous night not to be missed.
We now have our guests on-board along with Marzipan from Niederegger and Hendricks Gin
What more can one say ! We are looking forward to a fun filled week.
PLEASE NO BORA !!!

The BORA

The Bora has now been experienced and is something i certainly don’t want to experience any time soon , and especially not at sea.
We were very cosy tucked up in WABO  with secure lines to the pier.
The NOISE is just harrowing it really is relentless, also adding to it is the wind howling through the mast and ropes from all the yachts . This is also combined with thunder and amazing lightening show.
I felt the need to run around to every yacht and tighten the flapping halyards cause it can make you a little crazy !!!
(but of coarse i didn’t )
Its actualy like a bit like a wind organ – but extreme !! where are earplugs when you need them!
Although we were well secured  the constant gust, and water movement meant the jetty lines would slacken,
Frank along with many other boat owners were up quite a few times in the night adjusting lines.
This lasted for 2 nights! We had gust reported from someone on the quay at 52 knots. (i guess they couldn’t sleep and watched the  wind gauge).
Now that the extreme wind has settled it is time to sail off to a nice cove and relax as we have guest arriving on Sunday
so till the next blog
Doberjenja.
